FarmIQ is “massive” help for a sustainable farming business

Posted by Team at FarmIQ on 06/04/18 15:17

Using the FarmIQ software is a “massive” help for a business that is converting several Southland dairy farms to organic.

Shaun Neeley is GM of Aquila Sustainable Farming − established in June 2017 to take six farms to organic certification.

Using FarmIQ is saving Aquila time as well as improving the accuracy of information, says Shaun. The software gives them easy recording, good control and effective reporting.

Good farm records help manage disease

Posted by Team at FarmIQ on 10/03/18 18:37

Good farm records have helped to relieve some of the impact for a South Island farming business managing its way through a Mycoplasma Bovis infection.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) placed a Restricted Place Notice on two properties owned by Lone Star Farms in mid January because they had infected calves.

“We brought in about 400 calves for rearing and 200 of them came from a Southland property that was later found to have M. Bovis,” explains Lone Star General Manager Boyd Macdonald.

Software designed by Tony and other farmers

Posted by Team at FarmIQ on 21/02/18 13:59

Tony O’Boyle is one of hundreds of New Zealand farmers and rural professionals who have helped design farm software to make sure it meets farmers' future needs.

A Wairarapa farmer and company director, Tony was involved in development of the FarmIQ software, which is now being used on drystock and dairy farms, as well as in agribusiness.

Tony says he’s very pleased with how the software has turned out. It’s in daily use on Marangai Station, the 930ha property he has owned with his wife Pattie for 10 years. “Everyone at Marangai has the FarmIQ app on their phone.”

He is one of many farmers who have done their bit – giving the on-farm perspective and putting forward ideas as well as providing feedback when they’ve used a new feature. For his part Tony had a formal role as a member of the FarmIQ Technical Advisory Group that was set up in 2011, before the initial development phase.

ONE PLACE FOR FARM INFORMATION

Looking back, he says FarmIQ has succeeded in achieving his main objective: “Yeah definitely. I was always keen to have one industry standard repository for all farm information – so a farmer can get all their information into one place at one time.”

Software makes difference for New Zealand Pastures

Using farm software has significantly reduced costs for New Zealand Pastures and gives them good real-time information at their fingertips.

The corporate farming business finishes up to 300,000 lambs a year as well as 6000 beef cattle on five dryland properties in Canterbury and Otago.

New Zealand Pastures got to know the FarmIQ software when they used it as part of a lamb trial for the Red Meat Profit Partnership programme, recalls the company’s commercial officer Greg Campbell. “We could see the benefit of putting all the farms on.” The last one got set up in July 2016.

Software drives dairy farm profitability

Northland dairy farmer Jared Going says using farm management software is helping him drive profitability.

Jared took over the family farm at Maromaku, 30 minutes north of Whangarei, in 2004 and runs it with two staff. He’s using an app to record “everything that happens on the farm” to give him insights to make informed decisions.

“And it’s easy to meet legal requirements. For example, we use it for timesheets for the boys. They are responsible for putting the information in and then I approve it. It’s all there; it’s easy. It just adds the information in to the whole farming system.”

It just doesn’t make sense to record on paper any more, he says. “The app’s simple and easy to use – a piece of cake. You enter information straight in and you can view it straight away. You can look at it at the click of a button.

Farm map on phone is "outstanding" says beef farmer

Posted by Team at FarmIQ on 22/06/17 17:30

A top priority for Scott Blair when he took on a new farm management position two years ago was getting good farm software.

In fact, he was so keen that he initially paid for the subscription himself.

Scott manages 1500ha Pukekaroro Station in the far North, running about 2700 cattle – a mix of bull beef, dairy heifers for live export and carryover dairy cows. He works with three other fulltime staff.

The software he has chosen gives him “an electronic filing cabinet” for all the farm information.

“I got the best software I could find that could do everything we would want. We’re getting it set up to record everything. What we don’t want is a heap of different places to put information. This is our go-to place for recording and reporting.”

One particularly valuable feature is being able to use a farm map on a phone. It is "revolutionising" their farm management he says.

Farm recording helps build asset for future

Posted by Team at FarmIQ on 27/04/17 17:00

The Douglas-Clifford family believe in building their farm asset over time – and that now includes using farm software to build an online farm record.

The family, who were recently named winners of the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Award, run 22,000 stock units of sheep, beef and deer on 3000ha Stonyhurst on the coast south of Cheviot.

Charles Douglas-Clifford returned home with his wife Erin five years ago and has overseen the day-to-day farm management of Stonyhurst since then. He is the sixth generation on the property. The family chose a good spot – the long, narrow farm has rolling hills going down to coastal cliffs and they look out across Pegasus Bay.

Easier farm bookwork

Southland farmer Megan Vande Sandt went looking for a new way of recording farm information and has found software that fits.

Megan and her husband Justin run a 240ha drystock and grazing operation on the outskirts of Mossburn in northern Southland, which includes grazing dairy heifers for 21 months as well as leasing out Jersey sires.

Like many farming partnerships they divvy up the duties, with Justin focusing more on running the day-to-day farming and Megan running the bookwork side of things, as well as doing seasonal work off the farm organising calf contracts. She makes sure the right information is being recorded for any farm activity or event.
